Data Centers
The Responsible Solutions Team has
used a number of methods to help large data centers reduce cost
and improve reliability.
In particular, Responsible Solutions has been at the forefront of:
- Server Consolidation
- Remote Administration
- Automated Administration
- And the Use of Open Source Software
Server Consolidation
At a data center with nearly two thousand servers running a wide variety of versions of MS/Windows and of Unix, we were able to consolidate down to forty five. A 40-fold reduction. This was done without reducing performance or reliability. In fact, both performance and reliability were greatly improved.
Remote Administration
Systematic use of new methods and tools, that have since become common, allowed one data center to reduce hourly visits to the server room to the point where such trips are now only required for hardware maintenance.
Automated Administration
Simple (once conceptualized) mathematical models of failures and automated reset / restart / reboot procedures allowed the facility to gradually shift from full 24/7 staffing to just an occasional pager beep.
Open Source
As early as 1994, our customers were saving millions by using free and open source components in place of proprietary software. In one case, the customer not only saved $1.4 million in licensing fees, but also was able to repurpose six hundred thousand dollars worth of hardware because of the performance improvements achieved by appropriate use of open source systems.
